Mission Statement Students Defending Students, as a subsidy of Ohio University Student Senate, is an organization dedicated to serving the student community by representing and counseling students through the university judicial process. SDS strives to provide students with protection from the violation of their rights in the university, the judiciary, and the community. SDS is a non-profit organization and is run entirely by student volunteers who have been specifically educated in student rights at Ohio University.
Services Students Defending Students is not a legal organization; therefore, SDS representatives are not authorized to give legal advice of any kind. SDS does, however, provide the following services:
-Accompany students to procedural interviews, administrative hearings, and hearing boards
-Advocate for student-related issues in the university and community
-Educate peers on their rights as students and community members
-Suggest other resources for issues that cannot be resolved through SDS
Affiliate Organizations SDS strives to provide the best possible services for the students, and works closely with several organizations to better the services offered. The following is a list of organizations related to SDS:
- Ohio University Student Senate - Because SDS is a member of Student Senate, working together to make improvements in the disciplinary process is crucial. www.mystudentsenate.com
- Ohio University Judiciaries - SDS prides itself on promoting a close relationship with hearing officers to ensure the best representation for students. Baker Center 349 Phone: 740-593-2629
- Center for Student Legal Services - SDS reps can refer students to CSLS if they have legal questions/concerns and have paid the service fee (billed on tuition). www.studentlegalrights.org
- Ohio University Ombuds - The Office of the Ombuds (Crewson House) is a university provided organization which can offer conflict resolution and other services to students in order to ensure fair and equitable treatment. www.ohio.edu/ombuds
